A Bit About Split, Croatia
Split is Croatia’s second-largest city, set along the Adriatic coast and shaped by more than 1,700 years of history. At its heart is Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman emperor’s retirement home that gradually turned into a living city. Today, the palace isn’t just a ruin — it’s full of homes, shops, cafés, and daily life. Walking through its narrow stone alleys, it’s easy to forget where the ancient ends and the modern begins.
Split’s story blends fact and legend. One tale says the city grew around the palace because the locals were drawn to its strong stone walls during times of unrest. There’s even a legend that Emperor Diocletian, known for his brutal rule, chose Split for its healing sea air — and for its distance from Rome. Local myths also speak of the Grgur Ninski statue, whose toe, if rubbed, is said to bring good luck.
Food is another big part of life in Split. The cuisine is Mediterranean at its core — lots of fresh fish, olive oil, vegetables, and herbs. You’ll find grilled seafood served simply, hearty pašticada (a slow-cooked beef stew) with gnocchi, and daily trips to the pazar (green market) for fresh ingredients. Meals are often long and social, reflecting the relaxed pace of life here.
Split is a city where history, legend, and daily routines mix together — sometimes in the same square. Whether you’re here for a short stay or something longer, it has a quiet way of drawing you in.
